On 23 September 2026, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads was beginning to roll out in Vietnam alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan. The development matters for marketing because it brings a conversational advertising channel closer to businesses in the region. But the arrival of a new channel does not automatically create a new communications plan. The more important task is to understand what users are doing in the conversation and what a brand can contribute at that point.
Fact: OpenAI says ads are shown only to users on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans remain ad-free. The company also says ads are labeled, separate from ChatGPT answers, do not influence those answers, and that advertisers do not receive conversation data for sale. Management interpretation: these principles make the quality, relevance, and trustworthiness of a brand more important than trying to insert it into every conversation.
A different moment in the decision journey
People may come to ChatGPT to compare software, plan a trip, understand a service, or clarify a problem before contacting a supplier. In these situations, they often explain both their goal and their constraints: budget, time, team size, complexity, or what they do not yet understand. This is not exactly the same as a short search query, nor is it the same as scrolling through a social feed.
A brand should therefore not ask only, “Which creative will get more clicks?” A stronger question is: when a customer is considering a problem we genuinely solve, what information helps them evaluate their options better? For a B2B business, that may be a solution-selection criterion, a clear use situation, or a way to begin with a small trial. For a consumer service, it may be fit conditions, the value received, and limitations stated plainly.
Prepare before buying an impression
First, choose one or two decision situations that the brand can genuinely address. Do not begin with a list of every product. A company providing sales-management software, for example, might focus on a team that spends too much time consolidating orders and inventory, rather than trying to say everything about digital transformation. Focus makes the message more concrete and helps the audience judge whether the next step fits.
Second, review the destination after the ad. If an interested user is sent to a generic page with no example, no conditions of use, and no clear contact route, awareness spending can easily be wasted. A good landing page should quickly answer: which problem is addressed; for whom; what evidence or example is available; and what an interested person should do next. This is a customer-experience task, not only an advertising task.
Measure the quality of interest, not only clicks
OpenAI says it will continue building formats, optimization tools, and measurement solutions over the coming months. At this early stage, businesses should avoid drawing large conclusions from a single metric. Clicks can show that a message attracted attention, but they do not show whether the customer fits, understood the value, or moved toward a real conversation.
A marketing team can track a simple sequence: campaign visits; people who view explanatory content or examples; enquiries that state a specific problem; conversations that sales confirms are a fit; and the later outcome. For a product with a long buying cycle, it is also useful to record what prospects ask about and why they do not proceed. These data distinguish a message that is appealing to the wrong audience from one that is quieter but produces higher-quality demand.
Keep the brand’s boundaries clear in a conversational environment
Advertising in a conversational context can tempt a brand to say too much or to appear to understand the user more than it should. That is why the language needs to be clear about what is being promoted, must not imply that the brand knows the private content of a conversation, and must not promise what the product cannot deliver. Usefulness should go together with the user’s ability to recognize the content as advertising.
OpenAI’s announcement is the provider’s information about how the product is being introduced and the principles it has published. Vietnamese businesses still need to check access conditions, purchasing tools, formats, and actual measurement capability before allocating budget. The new channel is worth watching, but an investment decision should start with a small hypothesis: for the right problem, the right customer group, and a clear destination, can the brand create a higher-quality conversation?
