Google Moves Some Search Campaigns to AI Max

September 2026 is an important operating milestone for Google Ads teams. Google says eligible campaigns using Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match are being automatically moved to AI Max. This is not a change confined to an advertising interface. It can affect how the system finds queries, adapts ad text, and expands final URLs.

Fact: according to Google’s announcement, updated on 11 June 2026, the separate automatic move of Dynamic Search Ads to AI Max has been delayed to February 2027. Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match, however, still begin automatic upgrades in September 2026; Google expects eligible upgrades to finish by the end of the month. Management interpretation: businesses should treat this as a configuration change that needs control, not simply as a new feature to switch on.

What does AI Max change?

Google describes AI Max as a set of Search-campaign features including search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion. According to Google, these features use broader signals to find additional queries and make ads or landing pages more relevant. For automatically upgraded campaigns, legacy settings are intended to be mirrored to reduce initial disruption, but the degree of expansion and the way ads appear must still be observed account by account.

Google also reports internal data: among non-retail advertisers using the full feature suite, AI Max averaged more than 7% additional conversions or conversion value at comparable CPA/ROAS, compared with search term matching alone. This is provider data, not a performance promise for every industry, market, or account structure. It is therefore a reason to test with discipline, not a reason to abandon independent measurement.

Inventory the campaigns affected

The first task is to identify campaigns using Automatically Created Assets, campaign-level broad match, or Dynamic Search Ads, and record the current configuration before it changes. The inventory should include campaign objective, budget, keyword groups, final URLs, brand rules, conversion actions used for optimization, and the responsible owner. Without a pre-change baseline, a team will struggle to know whether later movement came from AI Max, seasonality, budget, or another change.

Campaigns with sensitive landing pages deserve particular attention: price pages, registration pages, location-specific pages, or pages with legal conditions. When final URL expansion is used, teams need to ensure that every page the system may select has suitable messaging, forms, and compliance content. Automation is only as good as the scope a business allows it to operate within.

Retain control of messaging and URLs

Text customization can make an ad more relevant to a query, but it also requires clearer brand guidance. Businesses should review prohibited claims, mandatory wording, product names, offer conditions, and language to avoid. In higher-risk industries, they should maintain an excluded-URL list and a review process for new pages before they enter campaign scope.

A financial-services company, for example, may allow AI Max to send a searcher to an approved product-explanation page, but should not allow it to select an old article with an expired promotional offer. Similarly, an ecommerce team needs to check that every page available for URL expansion has current inventory, price, and delivery-policy information.

Measure through an experiment design

Do not look only at total conversions in the first week after a change. Retain a comparison group of campaigns or a comparison period where possible, then follow cost, revenue or conversion value, CPA/ROAS, conversion rate, new queries, lead quality, and cancellation or return rate together. If the system brings more traffic but lead quality falls, the result should not be called growth simply because more forms were submitted.

The assessment period should be long enough to avoid a conclusion from a few unusual days. The responsible team should record the upgrade date, each budget, promotion, or landing-page change, and every decision made. This recording discipline helps separate the effect of a tool from the effect of other market changes.

Management implication: automation needs an owner

Google’s announcement shows advertising platforms moving more optimization decisions from manual controls to AI-based systems. That does not reduce management responsibility. It shifts responsibility from editing each advertising field to designing scope, input data, brand standards, and stop criteria.

During the transition month, every account should have a clear owner: confirm the campaign inventory; check URLs and content; monitor measures; record anomalies; and decide when to constrain or adjust the configuration. This lets a business gain from automation while retaining what matters most: the ability to explain why performance changed and to intervene when necessary.
